What IS a “breech-presentation?

Breech-Presentation Babies
What IS a “breech-presentation?
Breech births occur in approximately 1 out of 25 full-term births. Between the 32nd &
37th week of pregnancy, the baby usually turns into a head-down, or “vertex” position to
prepare for birth. When the baby does not turn, or only partially turns, the baby’s buttocks
(or another part of the body) are at the lower part of the cervix instead of the head, called
“breech-presentation”. (In rare cases, a baby will be sideways in the uterus with his
shoulder, back, or arm presenting first — this is called a transverse lie.) There are several
types of breech presentations, including frank breech (bottom first with feet up near the
head), complete breech (bottom first with legs crossed Indian-style), or footling breech
(one or both feet are poised to come out first).
All of these presentations are something to pay close attention to. There are several
methods that you can try to help your baby turn on their own. Some health care providers
will not deliver a breech baby vaginally, and will insist on a c-section.
Natural & Effective Techniques to Turn Baby
1) The Breech Tilt:
Using large, firm pillows, raise the hips 12ʺ″ or 30cm off the floor for 10-15 minutes, three
times a day. It is best to do this on an empty stomach when your baby is active. In this
technique, try to concentrate on the baby without tensing your body, especially in the
abdominal area. Breathe.
2) Using Music:
We know that babies can hear sounds outside the womb. Consequently, many women
have used music or taped recordings of their voice to try to get their baby to move
towards the sound! Placing headphones on the lower part of your abdomen and playing
either music or sounds of your voice can encourage babies to move towards the sounds
and out of a breech position.
3) Homeopathy:
Some homeopathic remedies have also been found to be successful in correcting breech
positions. Pulsatilla is one such remedy. How does it work? Pulsatilla is essentially soft
and changeable. On the physical plane, the uterus grows asymmetrically, and the baby fits
in there any way it can. Given in potency (a pharmaceutical process which progressively
dilutes natural substances and then vigorously shakes them, thereby releasing dormant
energy), pulsatilla stimulates the uterine muscle to grow more evenly. In. response to a
change in shape, the baby willingly and naturally assumes the most advantageous
position—a gentle intervention.
4) Moxibustion:
A very successful “do it yourself” technique with a proven high success rate is to use
locally applied heat treatment. The heat from burning moxa sticks can be used to
stimulate the baby’s movements and encourage it to turn. These sticks, shaped like cigars,
are available from herbalists, Chinese medicine stockists and some acupuncturists (who
use moxa sticks for other purposes) and they contain tightly rolled dried leaves of the
mugwort plant. They are very inexpensive and two sticks will be needed – they can be
used several times.
How? See this website for pictures & how-to’s.
3) Check-In With Yourself:
Are you experiencing fear, tension or other emotions? Any emotion that you have the
baby also feels. The baby may be reluctant to be born if it does not feel it is being birthed
into a safe, secure environment. Journal. Draw. Breathe. Cry. Take the afternoon in
nature. Talk with a supportive person who can actively listen.
If you feel you need assistance in identifying or clearing emotions, Dr. Paez specializes in
a very effective method called the “NeuroEmotional Technique” or NET.
4) Check-In With Your Baby:
When was the last time you talked to your baby? Use the methods in #3 above to
communicate with your baby and to ask what he/she needs in order to be born. Talk to
your baby every day and keep sending him/her to message about how joyous an occasion
it is that they are being born!
4) Myrrh Essential Oil:
A lesser known technique to coerce the baby to turn is to use myrrh essential oil on your
belly. Myrrh is a warm, earthy oil that affects hormonal and nervous systems. The oil has
a ‘righting’ effect, so it may adjust hormones or calm elements of the nervous system, or
otherwise help your body to help the baby right itself. A few drops diluted in oil has been
shown to be very effective in repositioning the baby, sometimes in as little as minutes!
Dilute 5-10 drops in 2-4 Tbs. of oil (try sesame, olive or almond oil) and rub directly on
your belly in a clockwise direction. It is important to get a high quality oil, as you are
especially sensitive right now, and do not need the fillers & often toxic ingredients in
certain brands of oils! Dr. Paez recommends Young Living Essential Oils –
5) Chiropractic Care:
Regular chiropractic care throughout your pregnancy is essential to maintaining good
nerve flow to your growing baby, as well as making sure your pelvis is properly aligned
to give birth. In addition, moms that are adjusted regularly have less ‘breechpresentation’
babies. The late Larry Webster, D.C., of the International Chiropractic
Pediatric Association, developed a technique that enabled chiropractors to reduce stress
on the pregnant woman’s pelvis leading to the relaxation of the uterus and surrounding
ligaments. A more relaxed uterus makes it easier for a breech baby to turn naturally. His
technique is known as the Webster Breech Technique. Dr. Paez specializes in this
technique, which he has had great success with!

“Ice Pick” Pain

Case of the Week: Not only do we see children, moms and moms-to-be we see ALOT of people with physical complaints such as the one we saw this past week. The patient was a young woman who had gone to her medical doctor because she had been having pain for 2 weeks, as she described,”like someone sticking an ice pick through my back and coming out my chest” – Yikes!! Apparently the doctor cleared her of any heart issues and sent her home unable to help her 🙁 so she talked to a friend who her told her she should try her doctor – Dr. Paez 🙂 After Dr. Paez examined her, he was able to adjust her the same day. When she came to the front to check out she was ecstatic! the pain was gone…so of course we had to ask Dr Paez (with the patient’s permission) what he found and what he did…
I’ve had many people who tell me they experience pain that feels like an ice pick being jabbed into their back. Only after
not being helped by their MD or worse told that it must be in their head do they seek help elsewhere. With over 15 years of experience as bodyworker and Doctor of Chiropractic I have been able to help many with this relatively unknown condition. It’s called a rib subluxation. The condition can occur from either small repeated movements that cause harm over time or one single traumic event, like falling off your mountain bike. What happens is the connection, where the rib articulates or attaches to the vertebra of the spine, is damaged causing a point of weakness in the ligamentous tissue. This weakness allows for slippage of the rib and vertebra leading to scar tissue which then locks the slippage in a misalgined position. The effects of this misalignment can be associated with muscle spasms in the surrounding area which adds the irritation of nerves producing the characteristic “ice pick” pain.
The solution is addressed in short and long term goals. Short term requires correct identification of the specific rib causing the pain, proper adjustment of the rib, muscular release of affected muscles and any emotional charge associated with the area. Long term goals need to be addressed through a “global” assessment of the spine. I have found the prevention of reoccurance or at least greatly reducing the frequency of relapses requires correction of postural distortion. In combination of postural correction, nutritional re-balancing and home/work postural modifications long term prognosis is great!

We want to let people know about this little known condition so please share with others. We are here to help.

Menstrual cramps and Chiropractic

Ever wonder if chiropractic can help with excessive cramping during menstration? Happy to report after 4 months of chiropractic care our 13 year old patient reported having 2 consecutive menstrual cycles nearly PAIN FREE! She was having terrible, debilitaing pain for 2 years on every cycle that would keep her home for at least 2-3 days and on medication! The human body is amazing and we are thrilled to help this young girl optimize her nervous system health to give her better quality of life!
Dr. Paez has been working in health care for over 20 years, 15 of those years he has dedicated himself through chiropractic to help people overcome health challenges that most of western medicine continues to “treat” from the outside in. Dr. Paez went to the prestigous Life University in Georgia because he wanted to understand the philosophy of chiropractic, that is he wanted to not only learn what was required to be a primary care physician but also to have a foundation from which to work with people. You see most people dont know this but chiropractic was developed off a major premise – sort of like Star Trek’s primary directive.
How does this relate to menstrual cramps and chiropractic? Well, the major premise of chiropractic acknowledges that a universal intelligence is in all matter and continuously giving to that matter all its properties and actions thus maintaining it in exisitance…. easier written than said for sure 🙂 The major premise is the foundation for the next 32 philosphical tenents of chiropractic and as each build on the previous the understanding of how Dr. Paez sees the body becomes more clear. One particular tenent states that every one of us is born with an innate intelligence. Our innate intelligence is from universal intelligence(I wrote about above) only its function is to keep us alive, keep us balanced. It’s always working in our best interest. There are things however that interfere with this process that is suppose to keep us healthy and alive. In the spine its referred as a subluxation which is in the most simpliest terms a stuck, misalignment of a bone in the spine that compromises the health of the nerve that is exiting the spine. Which finally bring me back to women, the menstrual cycle and the pain that is experienced every month. You see, when the pelvis or another area of the spine, misaligns it gets stuck, then with time pinches the nerve associated with the uterus and the muscles of the pelvis. What Dr. Paez has been doing is working the women’s inborn intelligence by correcting the spinal imbalance so that vital nerve flow can be restored. The results are women are regaining normal cycles, reducing heavy menstrual flow and reducing the number of days of cramping and the intensity of them too! Dr. Paez insistes that not all women will have the same result and he has seen in practice the earlier he starts from menarche or from when sypmtoms first start the better the chance that things can be normallized. If you think you may have a subluxation we recommend that you get yourself checked to see if Dr Paez can help you. 🙂

Okra & Cholesterol

The Lady’s Fingers, Okra, or Gumbo. A man suffering from constipation for 20 yrs started eating 6pcs of OKRA everyday & his blood sugar dropped from 135 to 98, his cholesterol & acid reflux were then under control. Okra is a powerhouse of valuable nutrients, nearly half of which is soluble fiber in the form of gums & pectins. Solublefiber helps to lower serum cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease. The other half is insoluble fiber which helps to keep the intestinal tract healthy, decreasing the risk of some forms of cancer, especially colo-rectal cancer. Nearly 10% of the recommended levels of vitamin B6 & folic acid is also present in a half cup of cooked okra. Okra is a rich source of many nutrients, including fiber, vitamin B6 & folic acid.

More facts about okra:
1. The superior fiber found in okra helps to stabilize blood sugar as it curbs the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract.
2. Okra’s mucilage not only binds cholesterol but bile acid carrying toxins dumped into it by the filtering liver. But it doesn’t stop there…
3. Many alternative health practitioners believe all disease begins in the colon. The okra fiber, absorbing water & ensuring bulk in stools, helps prevent
constipation. Fiber in general is helpful for this but okra is one of the best, along with ground flax seed & psyllium. Unlike harsh wheat bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, okra’s mucilage soothes, & okra facilitates elimination more comfortably by its slippery characteristic many people abhor. In other words, this incredibly valuable vegetable not only binds excess cholesterol & toxins (in bile acids) which cause numerous health problems, if not evacuated, but also assures their easy passage from the body. The veggie is completely non-toxic, non-habit forming (except for the many who greatly enjoy eating it), has no adverse side effects, is full of nutrients, & is economically within reach of most.
4. Further contributing to the health of the intestinal tract, okra fiber (as well as flax & psyllium) has no equal among fibers for feeding the good bacteria (probiotics).
5. To retain most of okra’s nutrients & self-digesting enzymes, it should be cooked as little as possible, e.g. with low heat or lightly steamed. Some eat it raw.
